Gorgeous flying weather today – clear and calm. I sit on the right side of the plane as we fly north, and I truly am looking out at Russia across the frozen tundra. There is a stark beauty from on high, and one wonders how people live here?

Arriving in Kittila, I have a déjà vu from Madagascar. I expect one of my tour members to meet me in the baggage claim, as he was supposed to be on the same flight as me. After all bags have been claimed and nobody else is left, the shuttle van departs for the hotel without him. I find out later that his watch was set for the wrong time zone, and he missed the flight, but was able to rebook on a later one.

The hotel is a basic lodge, but some of us have chosen to book in nearby cabins. They are adorable, as you will see in the photos. Each has its own sauna, plus a kitchen and living / dining area. We are here for six nights, so I unpack completely and put the suitcase away. Such a nice feeling!

I take a walk down to the lake in the twilight. There isn't a soul around, and I feel like I’ve been transported to Siberia. Well, actually, not so far away, and scenes from Dr. Zhivago play in my head.

The group arrives later this afternoon, and our welcome dinner is tonight. Adventures in wonderland start tomorrow morning!
