We arrived in Peurto Madryn on Tuesday 14th August & stayed in Chepatagonia Hostel...owned by a nice couple with a new 4month old baby! They live in hostel and they both work there...we don't know how they stuck it.
Anyway this was our base from which we could visit an ecological reserve called the Peninsula Valdes. We took a tour there on Wed 15th and it was amazing. The landscape is really barren, burnt brown ground. Nothing much grows there only the odd bush! The road through the place which was 400km long (took us the day to do) is only a gravel/sandy road. As we drove along we saw different types of lamas (apparently there are 4 types) which all looked the same to us! We then past some ostriches and emus. In the distance we could see lovely pink flamingos grazing beside a marsh but they were too far away to get proper photos of.
We then stopped off at viewing point where there was a sand bank, and on it lay maybe 10-12 elephant seals. It was unbelievable to be so close to something you have only ever seen David Attenborough talking about, never imagined we would ever be doing it. They were just lying there sleeping, every so often one would flicker his tail or scratch himself with his fin. One elephant seal eventually woke up and stumbled around awkwardly before dragging himself into the sea. We then drove onto a village called Puerto Pyramids where we were supposed to get a boat to go whale watching...but no such luck. It was too windy and the coast guard had closed down the pier so we weren't allowed out on the water. It was really disappointing as it was to be highlight of the day trip, but the sea did look wild choppy! Rite that was our tour of the Peninsula...read on for day 2...more whales
