The sun is out and we are snorkeling non-stop. We start before breakfast and are out of the water when the sun is setting. The coral outside our bungalow is everywhere and there are sooo many different kinds of life swimming around. We happen upon a large school of silver and yellow flat fish with huge eyes all facing the same direction but not swimming at all! We swim through them and they barely move! Lots of batfish chill nearby (I love them), and we even saw a blue-spotted stingray!
We leave home and take the motorbike 15 minutes out of town to a off-shore Japanese shipwreck. The wreck is awesome and the front of the boat is only a few meters below the surface. It's so beautiful to see all of this life growing on this old sunken ship!
We hear about another shipwreck about 30km outside of Amed. This one is a U.S. ship and is really best for diving but if you're lucky and the water is clear, you can see it from above while snorkeling. We decide to go give it a try. We are the only ones out there snorkeling and there is no marker as to where the boat actually is. We swim out from shore and don't see a thing. We hold our breath and dive down into the blue blackness but still nothing. We are about to go in when my intuition tells me that we should just try a couple meters over to the right. We swim over and below us emerges a massive wreck! Huge fish are feeding off the sides and beautiful corals grow in crazy formations around the metal scraps. There are divers inside the wreck and we are getting tickled by the streams of their trapped bubbles. The bubbles make the wreck really come alive! It's awesome, wreck diving is super fun and here we are in a place with 2 of them!! Fish are swimming all around us (some very, very close) and after we dive down to take a closer look we ascend to the surface with fish over our heads.
It's a backwards world underwater where you can feel like your flying with fish overhead.
Who needs drugs?!
Later we meet up with Dilly (tattoo guy from the boat) at a local restaurant where he is playing music with a bunch of friends. These are our new "Rasta" Balinesian friends. They love life, tattoos, making music, and their hometown. We all sit around a table singing With or Without You, Forever Young, Leaving on a Jetplane, and many many Bob Marley tunes. We even learn a couple Indonesian reggae songs!!
We sort of forgot about the tattoo until Dilly brings it up again. We make a plan for him to come over to our bungalow tomorrow morning with his friends to draw something up.
The boys show up around 10am with lots of different tattoo sketches that we flip through. The 2 tattoo artists are totally covered in beautiful tattoos so I am confident in their abilities. I talk to them about the styles I like and what I have in mind, not knowing if they are really understanding anything I'm saying. One guy barely speaks English and they are both very soft spoken to begin with. Dilly translates some, they nod. After they leave I start making some drawings of my own,
thinking I will definitely have to tweak whatever they come up with.
We meet up with them all later that night and they show me the sketch. All of my worries evaporate when I set eyes on it. It's perfect. They listened to everything I said and I'm really touched. We spend our last night in Amed hanging out with our new friends, listening to them play music. We have the best time and they ask us if we will always remember Amed. Of course! Not only is it our favorite place in Bali but with my new tattoo, how could we forget?
They come over to the bungalow the next morning and we all sit out on the porch. As I face the sea, Wawan and Sableng transfer the drawing tomy body. Then Wawan begins to ink. I get a bit lightheaded at first, it's been a while since I've felt this pain (and it's hot outside!) so Dilly and Joli set up a fan. Sableng gives me water and his little monkey keychain to hold. While I wince in pain, Dilly makes me laugh by talking about having sex on the beach with foreign girls.
After an hour and a half it's all finished! Now it's time to say goodbye to Amed and head back to Sanur. Our flight is tomorrow morning at 6am so we need to be closer to the airport.
Terima kasih banyak to my favorite Amed boys Dilly, Joli, Wawan, and Sableng <3 for making this the most memorable trip ever!!
