There is something about buying the ticket to the destination of your dreams. I'm not sure exactly what 'that something' is but it has something to do with one tiny part of the future being set in stone, and the past being a series of events leading up to it.

A bit about the past:
After a year of working like well-oiled-machines and trying to save lots of pennies, it is finally (almost) time to get up and go.  A few weeks ago we bought our ticket to Hong Kong (our hub into the Asian world) and today we reserved our flight from HK to Cebu City in the Philippines.

Our individual dreams and experiences of travel were something that we always had in common. When Jon and I first got together I was sure to let him know about my desire to travel the world, to which he responded, "I love it!  When can we go?"

After a few months of being together Jon's job took him to LA for 2 months. Of course I dutifully went with him after failing to come up with a reason why not.  This was our first taste of living together and boy was it yummy!

Shortly after getting our place together in south Park Slope we went to the Dominican Republic. Not being ones to like resorts or fat tourists, we chose a far off location (4 hours drive) on the Samana peninsula with only a couple of boutique hotels.  We rented a motorbike and explored everyday, somehow got by with our very mediocre spanish, ate delicious food and drank Presidente with the locals.  We also now know not to hire a guide asking his only pay be milk for his baby, and to just agree on a price beforehand. (How did we not see that one coming?)  At the airport on our final day the urge to not come home was greater than the normal "oh-man my vacation's over I wish I could stay". Apparently we had a desire to really experience a different culture and our thirst had not been quenched.

A few months after that we took a trip to visit Jon's friends who recently moved Mexico. In the 2 weeks we were there we "surfed", snorkeled with a baby octopus, ate cabeza tacos, saw an outdoor lucha libre event, and watched baby sea turtles running towards the ocean and after that we were sold.  We made a pact to save for 1 year and whatever we had after that we would go travel with.

Now here we are in December almost a year later, with our ticket for February 18th, and it's all starting to feel really really real.
