Remember how last time I drove up from Perth to the Coral Coast, it took three days? At the time, not being a particularly road-trip inclined person in the past, I thought we'd done "a lot" of driving, and was particularly proud of our run from Coral Bay to Port Hedland in eight hours. Hoo boy! That strained the bum from too much sitting!

So this morning we got up (later than we intended, and perhaps just a wee bit hungover on somebody's part) and packed all my stuff into Campbell's maroon old-man sedan and got ready for the "big drive": Exmouth to Perth, one day. We'd discussed stopping in Geraldton to break the trip but since he only had a few days off and we wanted to get down to Yallingup as soon as possible, it seemed smarter to just tough it out.

He drove first and I tried hard, I really did, to stay awake and be entertaining, but just outside Carnarvon I lost it and passed out. At the Overlander he woke me up and I took my turn at the driving. I'm still not very good at overtaking, but the roads were pretty empty so it wasn't much of a problem.

In Northampton we swapped again, had a brief dinner in Dongara (Dongara is really lovely, huge fig trees lying the main street and quirky little houses) and took off again. I only woke up when, after dark, the car pulled over and stopped in the middle of nowhere. I yawned. Campbell was putting his seat back and preparing to have a refresher nap. It was about 9:00 and we'd been on the road for twelve hours.

"No, I can drive now," I muttered, after downing a Sprite and a package of Starburst, so I drove on into the (now very foggy) night. Campbell was out of it for the next three hours, while I fretted about when it was good manners to have the high beams on and when not. Just past midnight we pulled into Perth, swapped again so he could navigate home, woke his poor parents up so we could stumble into the house, had a brief meeting with Malibu, the dog, and went to bed.
