On Wednesday we had a break from the weeding and got to plant a line of wattles, a eucalyptus type tree, along the edge of a national park. It just so happens that this park borders Russell Crowe's family property (from which I snatched a handful of grass, just to say that I had.) It was hot, but as soon as we got in under the canopy it cooled off, the bugs went away, and we laughed as we jumped on spades and churned about in the dirt. After lunch a group of aboriginal women elders came down to help us plant and tell us about the significance of the land that we were working on.

Thursday was for planting as well, in the Sherwood Nature Reserve, planting a tree bed to disguise a toilet and a BBQ shelter. Donny and I got off lightly by being put on watering duty while everyone else pushed wheelbarrows full of mulch back and forth. After that planting we went up on a walk through the rainforest to a waterfall at a cliff; due to recent drought the waterfall was barely a trickle, but still beautiful.

Friday was our last day at the house, sadly, as we packed up and went through one more half day of lazy weeding. Donny and I decided that we "couldn't find" any more lantana and took a long break on a log in the forest, out of sight from the main trail. Then all five of us were hustled off to a surf club in the closest town to have a cold shower before we had to appear at a fancy to-do in honour of some conservation bigwigs. We were a popular topic of conservation, not for our determined efforts at conserving the bush-but for our collection of leg scratches and impressive bug bites.
