Where I stayed
Today WW and I both got exactly the massages we wanted. WW went to the spa where I got mine yesterday and loved it. I went to a shack inside the village and got a really strong massage from a very large grandmother.
Here the Internet shops charge the same for using your own laptop on their WiFi as for using their computers. We can't find a restaurant or coffee shop with free WiFi. However, the 12,000 rp per hour is hardly burdensome.
Our lodging Villa Agung is not within walking distance of the main beach town of Kalibukbuk, and transport by bemo for two is 20,000 round trip. WW and I decided to rent a motorbike and got a Honda Vario for 35,000 per day (about $3.50) in town
Met an Australian guy (mid-60’s) and his Jakarta wife (late 40’s) who run villa resorts in South, Bali, center of the universe for high dollar partiers. Their home is in Kuta, where he says he can see into the Kuta jail from his balcony. I teased him that he must see a goodly number of his own countrymen there, as the Aussies pack Kuta, drink themselves blind, fight each other for fun, and occasionally accidentally hook up with ladyboys.
He responded, quite seriously, that there are more Americans in that jail than Aussies. This stunned WM, as there are many more Aussies in this area than Americans and their rowdy behavior is legendary. Then he shared even more surprising information—most of the Americans in jail there are young women who try to skip out on their hotel bills. He had a dislike of young American women as customers, said the ones who come to Bali are rich and beautiful and have a sense of entitlement to luxury, and that almost all of his bill jumpers were American girls.
This is a pretty stupid thing to do, as all he has to do is call Immigration at the Bali airport—remember, it’s an island- and they will detain the bill jumper. Then the real trouble begins. In addition to the debt at the hotel, Pamela Privileged will now also have to pay off the guy at Immigration.
Tomorrow morning (Sunday) I will rise early, find the market, and trap the elusive rambutan for an offering at the First Apostolic Church of Rambutan, which WM founded on Lombok in January 2009. WW has never tasted rambutan, and nobody should die before they eat this most delicious fruit.
