Anna and I drive the first 2 hours on dirt roads, not always that good to drive on. We average 60 km/h in some places. It is more than 200 kms to Yunta where the bitumen road starts. Morning coffee is at the 186 kms to Arkaroola sign - still 120 kms to Yunta. We meet a stumpy tailed lizard on the road. Johnathan picks him up to give us a better look. What a cute fellow - at least 30 cm long. He hurries into the bush and disappears immediately. The colour of his scales matches the colour of the bushes perfectly!
At Broken Hill we have a coffee in air conditioned Gloria Jeans Cafe - oh its good to be back in civilisation
We visit the art gallery of Jack Absalom - I love his Flinders ranges paintings, but at $15,000 a little too rich for my blood! Next stop the Geology museum - very interesting minerals on display. The silver tree story is fascinating. Henry Steiner (German immigrant) created the silver scupture from a single sheet of silver, ornamented with Indigenous Australians, emus, kangaroos, sheep and a Drover on horse back in 1879-1880. This sculpture later adorned Charles Rasp's dining room table. He was one of the seven original share holders of BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary). After Charles died in 1907, his widow Agnes was forced to hand the tree over to Australian authorities during WWI (logically - why? Because they were German). The tree was however handed back to her again a few years after the war.
We quickly drive 10 kms out of Broken Hill in time for sunset amongst 12 impressive sandstone sculptures in the Living Desert Reserve. They were carved in 1993 by artists from around the world. What a wonderful combination of art, Geology and nature. One sculpture is unfinished and has a sad note - the sculptor had to go back home (Bathurst island) when his new born daughter died of viral meningitis. I am reminded of our 4 year old son, who almost died of viral meningitis in 1992.
Dinner tonight at Broken Earth Restaurant on the hill with a view across the town. Walter loves the kangaroo steak - the rest of us enjoy the salmon and seafood platter. The Sandbpiper Chardonnay from Barossa valley (Eden valley) just perfect!
