After early morning coffee with beskuit (a present from my mother) and bush breakfast (dried peaches, pears, plums, nuts, rolled oats and yoghurt) I go for an early bird walk. My birthday present from Walter is a book about Australian bush tucker - very interesting. At home my real present is waiting - a 1901 Edwardian hall stand, bought at the last Rotary antiques fair.

While our Geologist husbands settle the bills and fill up the cars (the Arkaroola petrol price at $1.87 / litre is cheap compared to the Marree price at $1.95/litre), Anna and I phone the kids at the public phone booth (there is no internet and no mobile reception at Arkaroola). Soon after we leave Arkaroola, we see an emu dad with 5 chicks (not necesarily all his), whilst his wife is on business somewhere else (at work perhaps?).

We drive 220 km today, past Balcanoona, Wertaloona, Teatree Outstation, Wirrealpa, Angorichina, south of Blinman to Wilkawillena Gorge (where Johnathan did the research for his Phd). Coffee break is in a dry river bed in the shade of a a river red gum. We enter the Flinder Ranges National Park and once again experience the honesty system (place the entrance fees in the envelope and stick the entrance permit on your windscreen).

At Wilkawillina, Walter climbs the 586 m high mountain, Anna and Jonathan decide to climb up the Gorge, while I am happy to stay behind with my binoculors and bird book and add the blue winged parrot to my bird list.

At our camping site, Anna has problems with their tent. Walter helps her to fix dislodged tent poles. Jonanthan and I tackle dinner. Walter treats us once again to a sundowner lemon, lime and bitters with our nibblies. Jonanthan and I manage to serve Rump steak with pasta leftovers, green salad and beetroot salad with chilled Banrock Station Chardonnay. Not bad for bush camp! Dessert is tim tams. The view of the stars from my sleeping bag in the tent - just magic!
