Monolo, our guide from Tacuba, drove us to Parque Nacional Cerro Verde. From here there are 2 hikes, one up Volcan Santa Ana and 1 up Volcan Izalco. On this particular day Santa Ana was closed due to activity, which was fine with us as we had come to hike Izalco.

This was an interesting volcano hike as we actually started at a higher altitude than the volcano we hiked. Starting at the top of Cerro Verde we went down a steep trail that included 1650 steps. Once we reached the bottom we hiked up the volcano. This trail was a little bit more rugged and required the use of hands to stable yourself - I almost felt like I was rock climbing again, but not quite.

Once we reached the top the view was pretty good. Could see Lago Coatepeque a bit, and it was said that on clear days you could see all the way to the ocean Lago Coatepeque 1
Lago Coatepeque 1
. Of course it wasn't that clear of a day. Wrong season for that.

Sliding down the loose pebbles once again proved to be one of the highlights of climbing volcanoes. And it has the added benefit of turning previously boring white socks fun colors of black and grey. And then there was going back up those 1650 steps...

2 of the other guys and I were dropped of in Congo with our packs where we were able to hitch a ride in the back of a farm truck to the town by lake Coatepeque. There we waited for the bus for awhile and then decided to start walking as the sign said 2 km. It was a long walk until we hitched another ride to Amacuilco Guest House on the lake.

Took a dip in the lake at sunset and another at sunrise the next morning. Beautiful. In the morning ate breakfast with the flys at a little comedor down the road. Had an English/Spanish vocab lesson with one of the locals over breakfast. He would point to something and say "How do you say ... in English" then I would tell him and he would repeat it in spanish. Then was on my way, just another walk until I was able to hitch a ride to Congo with an ice cream sales men. Walked down the on-ramp to the highway and caught the bus.
