PART I
To preface the story, I am not really a huge romantic as in the proper definition but I love love. I love loving anyone really, the more the better. I am the one who will always tell you I love you ( if I do actually love you ofcourse!), even though you might not say it back. I think it takes a certain courage to put your heart out there, but the rewards are every bit worth it. I grew up in a household where we always told each other we loved each other. Never a night went by that I did not kiss my folks goodnight and tell them both I love them.
When I met Jer in 1999, we couldn't have been more opposite. Me; footloose and fancy-free, and he; kind of clammed up and shy, at least to me when I first met him. You know how things are when you get to know someone. It's just a natural progression of letting walls down and opening up to each other. As the cliche goes we fell, madly & deeply inlove with each other pretty much from the moment we met and moved in together shortly after that.
Fast forward to December 2004. We were going to embark on our 5th trip to SEA, this time, a very good friend of ours coming along for the ride. I had taken off the first week of November to do some volunteer work at a wildlife rescue center near Hua Hin in southern Thailand, and was going to meet the boys in Bangkok the second week of December. I had the most extraordinary experience at the center. 100% of my work was with rescued elephants, and, well, that's an entirely other story!
Darrell was loving Bangkok! He had bought himself a video camera and was going nuts filming everything, totally blown away. It was pretty funny but I could understand how he felt, remembering my first days in Bangkok, everything so tactile and weighty. I was glad we would have some footage of our trip, and more glad even that I wasn't the one who would be doing most of the filming! I am more a photo girl myself.
One night we were out in the city on a side street, having drinks at a table by one of the VW Bus/Bars, a VW literally converted into a traveling bar! Now, we had had a few and Jer and I were debating about something, I can't remember what, but it's all on video as Darrell pretty much never stopped filming! We're debaters. Some people might consider it arguing, but I don't. We have different minds and different opinions and thoughts, and we like to hash it out sometimes. I actually find it pretty fun. Jer is a master debater (hehe) and I suppose I just enjoy the hashing it out bit! This is where Darrell pipes in: "You two sound just like an old married couple." and then " Why don't you just get married here?!" as if he's had the most brilliant idea ever. Jer and I just look at each other. A knowing look it was indeed. It seemed at that moment time stood still. He got down on one knee and, well, the rest is history now.....
