'Mum! You should have seen it! Dad's belly made the waves bounce right off it. He was like a superhero ! '

There is so much wrong with that statement that I just don't know where to begin. Needless to say I put on a few pounds on the run up to going away and the fry up breakfasts of the last couple of days haven't helped.

So yes , we made it to Bondi beach today. Despite the many other sights of Sydney, it was the opportunity to mess around on the beach that appealed to our 7 and 11 year boys. Then again, how many major cities it the world are surrounded by so much sun and water and places to play in the fine light brown stuff ?

The day got off to a slow start and we decided to go for the easy option of the hotel restaurant for breakfast which was your typical affair of a cooked breakfast ( see above ...) after which we had a 15 minute hunt for Alex's Spider-Man sunglasses (would the cleaner really have pinched them ? ) and decided they must have got stuffed in a suitcase in the rush to go downstairs for some food.

Finally out of the hotel by 11:30, we jumped on the Explorer bus and did a full tour of the Eastern suburbs -- a house in Rosie or Double Bay ( they call it Double Pay locally apparently ) would be nice - before looping around once more to stop at Bondi beach. Not the most spectacular of beaches but you could see immediately the mass of surfers trying to catch the big waves.

A couple of Movenpick tubs of ice cream later and we found ourselves down to our trunks on the beach. As I said, this is a surfers beach and that soon became very clear as the life guards hemmed the swimmers in to a very small stretch beach between two flags, berating anybody who went outside. But we didnt mind - the waves were very strong and there were a few undercurrents so we felt happy to be under observation. Given the heat though, the sea was surprisingly cold.

And there we passed a couple of hours before jumping on a bus back to the hotel, a swim in the pool and then out to china town for dinner.
I'm a great fan of TripAdvisor bit discovered that it can be fallible: the place we chose wasnt that enjoyable and the food rather bland. Perhaps we are spoilt in London. More likely we just chose the wrong place.
Whatever they put in the food though managed to knock Alex for six and he went fast asleep. I asked the waiter what he used as I'd like to bottle it !

Another day over
