Tamworth to Tenterfield today (oooh, nice alliteration).

Started the day off at the Golden Guitar on the outskirts of Tamworth and no lighting strikes occured, even when Athena had her photo taken next to it with a Sex Pistols t-shirt on. We had a look around the gift shop, etc which was kinda full on but I must admit we drew the line at the Country Stars Wax Museum. Had it of been free I mighta had a look, but paying an admission charge was just not a line I was willing to cross ...

A wander around the main street of Tamworth (very pretty is Peel St), some brekky and we were off on our first leg for the day. Heading out of Tamworth we stopped at Kootingal for diesel and everyone came out for a look at the van. It really has been a showstopper in some places, I don't think I have been waved at this much ever!

We had a pit stop in Uralla to take a peek at Thunderbolt's grave but unfortunately couldn't go to his cave (past Armidale) cos it was at the end of an unsealed road and these are not part of our repetoire on strict instruction from the campervan man. Bummer.

A leisurely stroll around Armidale rounded off our morning of travel and a quick trip to the supermarket set us up for supplies for the next little while.

The countryside in this part of the world is just spectacular. Whilst the weather is really warm the trees have already moved into autumn and are the most amazing colours. The streets of Armidale in particular were full of trees of yellow and orange and brown. Stunning.

From Armidale we headed off to Glen Innes where we planned a short pit stop at the Standing Rocks before we headed off to our final destination of Tenterfield. The whole area was amusing Rob given that it is Celtic Country and has many roads, creeks, towns with Scottish names. The Standing Rocks are themselves a monument erected by the Celtic Soceity of Australia and are an attempt (and a damn fine one) at something resembling Stonehenge. After some dodgy 'hide behind the rock' photography we headed off for Tenterfield. .... Well we did until we lost radio reception and it became clear we weren't going to hear the big race. So we hoped desparately that we would come across a pub where we could watch it, a hope that did indeed appear completely desparate. That is until we came across the Deepwater Inn. In this fine establishment, where the front bar was the size of our rumpus room we watched the Golden Slipper with five locals and a dog. The company was excellent, the dog well behaved and .... no, no happy endings, Rob's horse lost.

So to Tenterfield Lodge and Caravan Park via a bottleshop and a quick giggle at the sign for the Peter Allen Motor Inn. We got the last spot in the park (much to the chagrin of the caravan behind us .. hehe) and are now settling down to have a few beers along with, it seems everyone else in the park. Ahh, the serenity. - Jo

UPDATE - the people opposite us have built a bonfire and it would appear that the idea is that everyone in the park go and stand around it. I'm loving it, Rob is concerned there might be campfire songs .... - Jo
