Up 530 (the porters shake your tent and then serve you tea) for the toughest day of the Inca Trail.  We are at 2950m and have to climb up to Dead Woman´s Pass at 4200m in 4 km.  That´s an average of 30cm up every single step!!  Breakfast was at 600 (panckaes and bread)  and we had this introduction to the porters which was pretty pointless and we left at 730.  Pretty much every step of the way was uphill - man it was gruelling.  We passed trhough a lot of different micro climates but all Jane (of Jane and Woz) and I for a time (while we still had breath and before i pulled ahead) cared about was finding rude names for each new set of rock stairs we had to climb.  Our favourite was "Bollocks to you you fucking wanky tospot".  The last 20 minutes  before the top of dead woman´s pass was so fucking steep it was ridiculous and there you are, gasping for breath in the thin air, sweating like a basterd and the people who got there ahead of you are cheering you on and you hate them a little for already being up there.  Got there 1100.  I am the 5th oldest in the group to do the walk and I came about 11 out of thirty so I´m not doing too bad!  Bloody 24 yr old Jo and 23 year old Mike (for example) are always up the front!
Posed for photos (I climbed the last few stairs again while someone used my camera to take my picture with and without a cig in my mouth (believe me, it was funny at the time because there is no way you would want a cig climbing this mountain!))  and felt a near rapture as my body was sucking up all this oxygen with deep breaths and I wasn´t using it to climb!  Plus there was just simple satisfaction - this was the hardest part of the trail.  Posed with my group (by speed), Kylie, Liz, Jules etc. then walked down by myself listenig to a CD.   It was a steep decent but it was downhill!  Steps are hard on the kness but gravity is your friend!  It was really nice to be on my own for a bit and i got to camp at 1210 - 4hrs 40 mins total (and a total of 6 kms).  The rest of the afternoon was very chilled, everyone who was getting down was glowing and happy - we´d done it!  We had lunch 100, I wrote in diary (no internet or even phone reception on the trail!).  There was a gorgeous view from the tent of the surrounding mountains and clouds (which later on rolled in and fogged us in).  Started playing chess with Mike again.  (Killed him in  4 moves the first game, started on rum for the 2nd and beat him just after dinner and stupidly lost the 3rd while winning around 10:00).  Afternon tea 530 and we all got distracted by the gorgeous light on the clouds in the valley in the distance (the fog had gone).   Everyone was feeling very content and happy with themselves as they watched it.  We were sent to bed early again so Mike and I played our last game by torchlight and my batteries failed on the way to the toilet at 1030 - what fun!
