Val has been reading up on the history of this area. There used to be a place near the base of the Riley Creek tressel that was called "the hole." This was an area where people made and sold moonshine, and prostitutes hung out. The McKinley Station children were forbidden to go near there because of the bad language used there and the bad behavior that was exhibited there. So of course Val couldn't wait to go check the place out. Dave wasn't about to let Val go alone so they parked the truck at the train station and hiked down the tracks. They only went a little way past the signs that say not to, and took a few pictures from the tressel. Then Dave noticed that there was a trail leading down to the creek. The going was steep, and they had to hang on to bushes and limbs of trees to avoid sliding down the mountainside. When they finally reached the bottom they hooked up with some maintained trails, and walked around what used to be the hole. They did not find any moonshine or prostitutes
You will probably notice smoke in some of these pictures. It is still smokey here depending on which way the wind is blowing. Sometimes we will have blue skies on the right, and smokey on the left.
Val says many thanks to Doug and Susie Burns for their contribution to the flush and furnace fund. Val is working on a blog of flowers for Susie.
Lover of both flora and fauna,
Remington Beagle
P.S.
The rock/tent thing goes like this: Val and Dave were walking along this trail on a ridge when Val spied what she thought was a tent by the creek. Dave looked and also thought it was a tent, and probably illegally camping there. So down the hill they go, through the bush and around the bend to find that the tent is really a big rock.
Yikes! Did I hear a train?
. They did find the location of the hotel built by Maurice Morino. Unfortunately the hotel burned to the ground in the 1950's. What a great time they had, and Val can't wait to go back and explore some more. You will probably notice smoke in some of these pictures. It is still smokey here depending on which way the wind is blowing. Sometimes we will have blue skies on the right, and smokey on the left.
