OK, I haven't been paying a lot for a room; why bother? I'm not staying a week. It's not raining all day. I've got better things to do than stare at corporate interiors.
But I hit a new low with the Arrowhead Motel in Gallup. It's on historic Rte 66, with so many other tired looking motels (including ones in Tucumcari, where many were closed/abandoned). But unlike the other ones, this room was a truly sad reminder of tough times. There was a velvet landscape painting (signed, mind you) over the bed, the dresser edge looked like pit bulls had their way with it, the tap leeked of course, the bathroom walls were alive, the bathroom cabinet door facing must have savaged by the same pit bulls. But the eeriest thing was the AC/heating unit. A nearly 6 foot tall metal grill with a shroud of Turin rust/water stain the whole face of it. I am not sure what I saw in it, I tried not to look at the outlines much. Sort of Vincent Price's fly face. It made low hissing sounds much of the night.
When I get a chance to upload the images, you will be able to appreciate the room fully.
I was glad to wake up the next morning and think about how quickly I could get out. Oh, yes, the manager had said there was coffee in the coffe maker. I opened it, expecting to see a sealed baggie like at other places, but no, there it was, real coffee that had sat out in the filter for HOW LONG? Fortunately I pride myself on being able to drink most coffee first thing in the morning so I made it up. It was drinkable but only 1 and a half cups worth.
Got out and on the road to Show Low/Lakeside for the next boat payment installment at their Kawasaki dealer, specifically the clutch question.
