Flag of United States  , Pennsylvania
Thursday, September 20, 2012

We spent the day at the Gettysburg Battlefield. It covers acres of land and it is hard to believe that the armies could even move across the terrain.  The North fought from Cemetary Ridge and the South were at Seminary Ridge.

The Pennsylvania Memorial is the largest on the land.  It has statues of Lincoln as well as the generals who fought in the battle.  The Gettysburg Address is on one panel of the monument.  the others list all of the soldiers from that regiment who fought.

The Minnesota Memorial is interesting because on July 2, 1863, the Confederate soldiers started advancing on Cemetary Ridge.  The troops held them off until reinforcements arrived. There were many casualties with only 47 out 270 surviving.

The High Water mark of the rebellion repulsed Lonstreet's assault and turned the tide of the War.  the South never won another battle.

We are glad that we stopped to see Geetysburg, it was worth the trip.
