What a disapointment..........Rainy season apparently arrived early and it rained almost every day. My memories of Samui are the perfect blue sky, calm warm sea, hot sand, cocktails on the beach but not this time. There were only 3 days out of 8 that we actually got to hang out on the beach. Lucky we did have rain ponchos to race around in.
Despite the rain, we did have a good time. Our days were spent eating, mucking round the shops, eating, sitting in the bungalows, reading and drinking wine, eating chips everynight around 4ish on the balcony of the bungalow then eating dinner.
Jo and Pie surprised us to celebrate Dans birthday. We had a great dinner then Jo, Pie, Dan and I went out to party. Ended up getting talked into a ladyboy caberet show by a tout on the street and drinkng Samsong Whiskey buckets (I thought we should have learnt not to do this from our Chang Mai night on buckets but obviously not!) then onto dance bars till about 4am in the morning. We did get to hold a monkey for a few photos along the way too as a guy with his monkey was outside the dance bars. Very cute monkey. After the bars closed, the next obvious thing (very obvious after many beers and whiskey buckets) for us to all do was go swimming. Great at the time however after I managed to slip over on the marble floor in the bathroom and cut my head open. The next day was a total wipeout as we were both hung over and my head has never hurt so much. Actually a McDs plain hamburger has never tasted so good either! As it turned out, that day was probably the best day weather wise and we spent it recovering. Must be getting old!
We were lucky enough to get another reasonably fine day before Dan started his dive course. We hired motorbikes and went for a ride round Samui Island for the day. We didnt get to see anything else of Koh Samui on our last visit so this was good. We saw the Big Buddha, a butterfly house, monkey show and grandmother and grandfather rocks plus stopped for lunch along the way. A cool drive.
Dan, Jo and Pie signed up for a PADI dive course for 3 days. The weather was still bad and apparently the water had terrible visability and they couldnt get out to Koh Tao and other good dive spots that they had hoped for. They still completed the course and are now all certifed divers so I am hoping to see lots of yum fresh seafood in the future!
One of the days while the others were diving, Bill, Ruth and me went on a Elephant Safari tour for a few hours. A very rush around trip but fun at the same time. First we went on an elephant ride for 30mins then saw a baby elephant show in which I received a back massage by a 1.5 year old elephant and Bill goalkeeped for the elephant showing off his soccer goal kicking skills, then we saw a monkey pick a couple of coconuts out of the tree. Packed back into the minivan and were whizzed to another site where we took a ride on an ox pulled cart round a rice paddy then I made a green papaya salad for a snack and they guide explained to us the process of growing rice and that was the tour! Short and sweet but very enjoyable too.
More to come.........
