Day 1 of approx 90 days backpacking. Had a good flight over from Nagoya - approx 7 hours. Was a bit frazzled when I finally arrived at KL Airport. Not really knowing what to expect or how to get to the guesthouse etc. Just about to step into the elevator to catch the train to the city and a KL man says - hey your from New Zealand. I was really hesitant about chatting with him but he apparently lived in NZ and was well travelled backpacking. I gave him some tough questions on NZ which he could answer so decided that maybe/hopefully he was as he said, keen to show any kiwi around his city. So i tottled along with him and he showed me my guesthouse. Booked in then we walked to the KL Petrona Twin Towers which are the tallest buildings in the world. Pretty amazing really and they have a huge shopping complex in the building too. A little out of my price league as it was all the big international labels - Prada, Gucci etc.
After a wander round we went to a food market for some dinner. I had chicken satay and it was all good.
I was feeling pretty stuffed after dinner so wanted to head back to the guesthouse. Said bye to the friendly man who said I must return to KL for a decent stay oneday.
The hostel I stayed in was a newish one. Pretty expensive for what it was and compared to other places in SE Asia. I payed US$11 for a room with a bed and a locker. Shared bathrooms with cold water - guess ill have to get used to the cold water! I managed to get almost no sleep - worrying wether my alarm would wake me at 6am for the flight and my room was right next to the lounge area where there were guys shouting at the cricket of tv.
I wasnt all that taken by KL from the short time I was there. Tomorrow it is onto Cambodia.
