Lunch: Turkey sandwich on 9 grain bread, chips, diet pepsi. Larry: Angus burger, chips, pepsi.Lunch companions: The woman and her daughter that had been across the hall from us in the sleeper car. They were from Chicago and were heading home from vacation.
We boarded “The Empire Builder” and pulled out of Chicago on time at 2:15pm. What a nice set up we had. We were on the upper level of a double decker train car this time and a toilet with shower was right outside our room. Across the hall was a really nice couple from Denmark, who are going to tour the US. They were on their way to Yellowstone. She was an English teacher in Denmark and he taught German. They’d not been on an American train before and they were really enjoying themselves. They wondered why more Americans don’t take the train! Good question!
We were in car # 0732, sleeper # 17. What a nice car to be assigned to. This was the first car behind the engine - and the front half of this car was the crew section so that’s where they slept - and there were some toilets/showers and a crew area downstairs. Consequently, there wasn't a lot of “thru traffic” in the car like there was in the next sleeper cars, as people made their way to the dining car and beyond. The dining car was 3 cars down from ours. The observation/lounge car was 6 cars down, with some coach cars in-between. There were a lot of cars on the train, with other sleepers towards the end of the train. The lounge car, some coach cars and the sleepers at the other end of the train would break off when we get to Spokane. They'd hook up to another engine and go on to Portland. Our section will go on to Seattle.
