This is where the train from Boston meets up with the train from New York and forms one long train into Chicago. We arrived on time, a little early in fact, but the New York train hadn’t arrived so we had to wait for them. We were scheduled for a 90 minute stop there anyway. We were allowed to disembark and go into the station but after Larry and I got a cup of “real coffee”, as Larry says (Latte in other words), we decided to go back on the train and wait in our car.
The New York section of the train carried the dining car. The Boston section carried the lounge. When we connected, we had both. We had been served lunch in the lounge car, about 45 minutes after leaving Boston. It was very casual and pretty good but we were glad to reacquire the dining car so we’d have a full menu of hot food again for dinner.
Lunch: Beef wrap with Blue Cheese, chips, soda and a chocolate carmel brownie. Lunch Companions: A couple from Flagstad, AZ., who were born and raised in Salem, MA. It was very interesting talking to them and finding out more of the background and history of Salem. It sounds like we saw just the right things and avoided the tourist traps. Even so, we would both like to go back there again some day.
We’d like to go back to Boston sometime too. It is such an incredibly history rich city. Aside from the historical aspects of the city, one especially interesting fact we learned is that the “on street parking” on the exclusive Beacon Hill (where Ted Kennedy lived) is “deeded property” passed down through generations - and it can cost upward of $300,000 just for a parking space alone for one car now!! As the tour guide pointed out though… when you’ve spent millions for your home or condo - what’s another $300,000. We can be very appreciative of our garages and parking spaces!
About 6:00pm, while waiting in Albany, we got a text message from Drew. He and Jessica had just landed in NYC. They’ll be spending a day there before flying out for Italy. As for us… we continued westward.
