We moved north out of Salem and headed up the Massachusetts coast and on into New Hampshire .  We took highway 1A rather than the Interstate.  This is an old route and it was very scenic.  In fact, parts of it were stunningly beautiful.  Much of it took us directly along the ocean and we enjoyed the cooler breeze off the water.  We went through Salisbury Beach  in Massachussets and stopped at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire, just a mile or so further down the road.  We parked alongside the ocean in a State Park and walked out to the beach so we could take pictures of and by the Atlantic ocean.  We continued driving and we enjoyed a section of 1A that took us past mansion after mansion.  Huge, huge, beautiful homes sat facing the ocean on high points of land.  They were absolutely breathtaking.  We couldn't imagine who lived in these homes.  There was a couple of them with "for sale" signs on them.  I'd be surprised if it wasn't difficult to find a buyer.

That is why we prefer not to drive interstate roads. We were on that same stretch of road (1a) last trip. Loved it. The old homes are huge and land so well groomed around them.
