As we came into Worcester, MA., I was dismayed at the sight along the railroad tracks. After all of the beautiful scenery we’d seen and the clean areas along the way, Worcester took a grand prize at giving worst a sad impression.  It was as though the city dump itself was located along the rails coming into town. For a few miles, there were discards of old tires, garbage and trash, old broken plastic toys, a few shopping carts turned on their sides, a couple rotting mattresses and a box spring… even an old sofa dumped over and an over stuffed chair. It was such a shame.  It was a mess… and the only bad area we’d seen along the whole route. There was a concrete wall of sorts that hid it from the view of the town, however, so I suppose no one bothered with it.  But  the town itself, from what could be seen, seemed very depressed also and perhaps on hard times. Whole blocks of empty concrete was empty of buildings or anything and had grass growing up through the pavement.  It was very sad.  I'm sorry to even write about this - but the bad goes with the good.  Hopefully it was just a small area of that community and the rest of it is faring well.

It seems that it is not uncommon to dump along the rallroad tracks, even from the bay area to SF, when we lived there and would take the train, you would not believe some areas along the tracks, but it was obscured from the streets. view.
