Dar es Salaam.

For some, the words alone conjure up images of rubble and destruction following the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in this Tanzanian city and the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

But Dar's roots and cultures run much deeper than this shallow depiction of the coastal city, the name of which means "Haven of Peace." Calm and cleaned up, Dar es Salaam's city centre and neighbouring beach areas are endowed with ample space to explore its vibrant life.

In every way but official title, this urban area stands as the capital of Tanzania, where I embark on a three-week holiday.
