We arrived at London's Stansted airport after very short flight from Amsterdam to a very pleasant surprise. The tiny rental car we had booked was not available so we were upgraded to a nice bug luxury sedan, a Saab 93 Aero, 2.0l turbo! The car was brand new and only had 1000 miles on the clock and was kitted with leather seats, cruise control, climate control and an awesome sound system. This was a great start to our three day tour of the English country side.

Our original idea was to spend quite a bit of time in the UK and visit all our friends but we ran out of time and had to adjust our plans and we decided to cut some days in the UK as we'd both visited London previously and the fact that we did not require a visa meant it would be easy to return. So left with only three days we decided to spend some time in the English country side and at the same time catching up with of friends on route.

From Stansted Airport we headed west to the little village of Bedford where Nicky & Richard lives. It's hard to believe, but we met the two of them on a 'wine tour' a few months earlier in Western Australia. There are just some people that you click with immediately and we got on with Nicky and Richard like a house on fire, which coincidently was straight after our first glass of wine. The two of them went to so much effort to make our visit special for us and even took valuable time off work to show us around the area. Soon after arriving we were treated to great lunch at one of their favourite restaurants in the area and I wasted no time tucking into my favourite English meal, bangers and mash. Washed down with a Guinness or two I was beginning to remember why I loved this country

To really stick with English tradition we visited the beautiful Woburn Abbey which was situated in an enormous 3000 acre deer park, the park is home to thousands of free roaming deer. After a walk around the gardens of the Abby we sat down to a delicious English tea and scones, pinkies in the air and all. Very enjoyable indeed!

Back at Richard and Nicky's, Richard cooked up a storm and prepared a delicious creamed chicken dish with all the trimmings and some of the best roast potato's I'd ever eaten. Some great wines were tasted and the biggest surprise of the night was an English white wine Richard had bought for us to try. It was surprisingly good and had lovely aromatic aromas and a good balance between sugar and acidity.
