In the heart of the French Riviera lies Nice a smallish city with a population of approximately 350,000 people. The highlight of Nice definitely seems to be its long stretches of pebbled beaches filled with sun lovers. The beaches are periodically divided into either public stretches or cordoned off sections where you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas and by mid day it seems there is not an uncovered pebble on the beach. On the first day, right after dropping off our bags we headed straight for the supermarket to purchase some picnic supplies before making our way to the beach with a good bottle of Chianti. It was nice for a change to be back on the beach and we spent a few hours enjoying a pleasant picnic with wine and just people watching and the sun set.
Sadly we were both still battling with the nasty colds we had picked up in Rome but we determined not to let this slow us down too much and planned a day trip to Monaco for the following day. After initially trying to buy train tickets which proved to be quite a challenge as we had to stand in a long queue only to find out that there were considerable delays on all the outgoing trains so we instead trekked to the other end of the city to catch the local bus. This would not have been such a bad thing if it were not for the fact that it was a pretty warm summer's day, 38 degrees in the shade. At the end of the day we were glad we took the bus as it had good air-conditioning and gave us an opportunity to take in all the scenery between Nice and Monaco which are only 17km apart.
