IMH: We spent one night in Ulaanbaatar, in a lovely 4 star hotel, before departing for Russia. In hindsight, it would have been more fun spending another night at the Ger Camp where you feel in touch with the Mongolian countryside as opposed to in the dreary Ulaanbaatar which resembles something out of the communist era.
We probably did not spent enough time in the city to truly appreciate it, but superficially, it looks liker a very poor city, with a few sites of interest - such as a monastery, but it did not feel as tough we were in Mongolia... we might as well have been in another poor city in another country.
The Museum of Natural History had some amazing displays, including the largest full size, intact dinosaur skeleton I've ever seen, most these dinosaur relics were found in the Gobi desert. Sadly the displays are so poorly presented in the dilapidated museum, that the awe of the discoveries are somehow lost.
Ulaanbaatar was a good place to stock-up on food and drinks for the next train trip of two nights and 1.5 days to Irkusk in Siberia.
