Western Australia is beautiful but beauty in this sense comes with a hefty price tag, especially for South Africans. We found countless beautiful beaches and landscapes, very friendly people, good food and great wines. No wonder so many South Africans live in Perth and its surrounds. It very easy to travel around WA (as it is called out here) roads are well signposted and all roads we travelled on where in very good condition. Only drawback was the frustratingly low speed limits, yawn....

This first leg of the trip also exposed the two of us to a side of travel we have never really experiences, budget travel. Not that we are going hungry or had to sacrifice our occasional bottle of wine but more about how we can save a bit here to spend a bit there. We have gradually been exposed to real budget accommodation, our first few nights in Perth were quite luxurious there we had a twin room with en-suite bathroom, air-conditioning, fridge, TV and DVD player, to a slightly smaller room in Margaret River minus the DVD player and AC to the room only and shared bathrooms and showers in Pemberton, Walpole and our last night in Perth.. As I'm typing this IM burst in from the communal showers and comments in disgust; "The slimy shower curtain kept sticking to me, I had to shower with my shoes on! It feels like varsity res but worse, at least there you knew the people". Well I can't blame her since holidays for us were always a treat that we worked hard for all year and we were willing to pay for a little luxury (like your own bathroom) when we did go on holiday. My biggest frustration was the fact that most the beds we slept on had seen more traffic than rush hour on Sheikh Zayed road (people from Dubai will know what I mean).

All in all we had a great time in WA and would be back in a heart beat, we felt that there was so much more to see and explore, not even to mention that we did not see any of WA north of Perth which a account for 80% of the territory.

Highlights: Beautiful beaches, great wine, great weather (not too hot and not too cold), no real traffic, out-door life style, abundant parks and good food.

Lowlights: That our budget didn't allow us to splash in the beautiful area, price of their wines!!
