Bye-bye Dubai...
What an opportunity! We came to Dubai early 2005 not really knowing what to expect, we were told all sorts of things about the country and culture which turned-out to be far from the truth. We arrived as newly weds, ready to learn and grow together which probably helped us in overcoming some of the challenges of setting into a new country.
We had a great time; personally I believe we have grown individually and as a couple much more than we ever anticipated. We got to appreciate and understand some of the Asian and subcontinent cultures better and of course the Muslim culture and Islam. We learned that hard work and commitment, honesty and trust mean different things to different people. We grew both on a professional and personal level.
We were also fortunate enough to save-up a bit of money, which makes this 'epic journey' possible. We cannot thank God enough for all our blessings!
We met amazing, people and formed special friendships with people from all over the globe with whom we hope to stay in touch with and meet-up again somewhere some day. It was these friends and colleagues together with the consistent support from family at home who's support carried us through the last couple of months in preparing the trip while completing part-time studies, organised and provided talent retention offers to both of us for re-employment upon our return, packing-up our house to ship back to South Africa and who accommodated us when we were "homeless". We are very grateful to each and everyone for their support!!!
Thinking about our (almost) 3 years in Dubai, we came up with the lists below of things we'll miss and things we are grateful to say goodbye to.
Things we'll miss of Dubai: · Women only queues · Friday brunches and all inclusive dinner deals - always an exceptional gastronomic experience · Camping in the desert · Amazing sunsets · Ease and affordability of travel to the rest of the world from Dubai · Low petrol price · Cheap cars · The impressive shopping malls and of course shopping festival & summer surprises Things we won't miss of Dubai: · SPITTING (and associated noises)! · Dubai drivers - aggressive, fast and fearless · Sweaty summers · Dust everywhere all the time · Metro construction · Price of accommodation · The huge sense of materialism
