. They were good. After lunch and a stop at the popsicle stand to try a different flavour, those of us who went snorkelling took a water taxi over to West Bay to spend the rest of the afternoon on the beach. I think we pushed the limits on the water taxi with 8 of us and the driver in a tiny boat propelled by a 15hp engine. The weather was a bit more hazy than the previous day so the sun wasn't quite as hot which made it much more pleasant. We found a few of the others on the beach and set up next to them. The rest of the afternoon was spent on the beach but mainly in the water. The intention was to stay for sunset but clouds on the horizon did not allow for any sunset. Luckily we got great pictures yesterday. After making our way back by water taxi, we had our group briefing prior to heading out for supper.
For supper 7 of us went down the road in West End to an Argentinean steak house and got a table right on the beach. It was literally patio furniture on the beach. For supper we spoiled ourselves with surf and turf which included a half filet steak, a lobster tail and two side dishes all cooked over open flame. The lobster was a bit tough due to it being grilled but the meal as a whole was great. After supper we headed back to our hotel and got our left over beer. The rest of the group was sitting on one of the docks so we joined them. They were headed out to a dance club but that didn't really interest us so we stayed at the dock and had a few libations under the stars. We called it an early night again to try and give our bodies a chance to fight of this cold before the more physical activities start on the next leg of our journey including climbing volcanoes.
Tomorrow we have a free morning before catching an afternoon flight to Tegucigalpa. We then have a three hour drive to Leon in Nicaragua.
Another excruciating day on the tropical island of Roatan. We had to be up by 10:00 to meet those from our group who were going snorkelling so we slept in pretty much until we had to go. We both seem to have gotten the bug that has been going around the rest of the group. It hasn't been near as bad as some of the others had or stopped us from doing any activities, more of a nuisance so the sleep in did some good. The snorkelling was really good and we didn't have to travel far from our hotel. There were many more fish than yesterday including seeing a couple of lionfish. They are a neat species even though they are destroying the reef and are the only species you can legally hunt. We also rode past a dolphin sanctuary but didn't take any pictures, it doesn't count if they are in a pen. After snorkelling and getting cleaned up, we walked into West End and had lunch at a little stand that served local food. We each had the beef baleadras which are like soft tacos filled with beef beans and cheese
