We were up very early this morning and hit the highway driving south. We needed to leave early as it is a 6 hour drive to Wellington and we wanted to give ourselves some time to do something when we got there. The drive took us around lake Taupo, a crater lake created by an old volcano and the biggest lake in New Zealand. From there we headed into the highlands past Mt. Tongariro which last erupted around 50 years ago. It hit 2 degrees and we had some snow for a few minutes as we drove through this area giving us a taste of what to expect when we get back home. We stopped for lunch at Subway in a town called Bulls. Apparently they don't have mustard or buffalo sauce at Subway here, so I couldn't get my usual. They do make their sandwiches with love though unlike at home. We made it to Wellington shortly after 13:00 and expert navigator Gina took us straight to Te Papa, New Zealand's national museum which is right on the waterfront in a beautiful building. Free admission is always a bonus but they must be getting a lot of government funding to keep that place going as it was awesome. Of course we spent the majority of our time in the earth sciences exhibits looking at the geology and biology of the country. They also had a big cultural exhibit going through the history of both the first Maori settlers and the first British colonists. It was good as it was very open and honest showing the good, the bad and the ugly of their history. We lost track of time wondering around until one of the workers told us we had 8 minutes left before they closed! After the museum we checked into our hotel. For the first time this trip we had issues with the booking as it apparently wasn't in their system but we got it sorted out. The street that our hotel is on is full of restaurants of all different kinds, with so many choices we settled on wood fire pizza. It was excellent. We walked around downtown for a bit before heading back to the hotel. We have an early morning again tomorrow as we catch the ferry to the South Island.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Coach!!!
