Where I stayed
On the long ride, we had the whole van to ourselves for the first hour then we were joined by two German girls, Katharina and Corinna. We enjoyed the ride chatting and resting.
Once we were at Kuala Tahan (after 8-9 hours), all four of us started our hunt for a place to stay. We started with our first picks but no luck, I guess right now the Malay students are on vacation for two weeks so they are all traveling. Finally, I took out our cell phone and started calling places in the Lonely Planet book. Most were full and finally one had a dorm room with four beds for the night but we had to take a boat over to their village. This was not the smartest thing because we could not really come back if we did not like it.
So we got on a boat and made our 3 minute journey to the Mat Leon Village, which was pretty far from the main town, truly in the jungle. So we climbed up to check out our dorm for the night. As we walked up, all three of us girls were thinking…"it's ok, it’s just one night”. The room was actually really clean and nice but the bathrooms were quite dirty, dark and didn’t even have sinks. So if we were looking for a true jungle experience this would be the place to be.
The night was not too bad and we even had a decent ceiling fan. It was the German girls’ first night in a true jungle place so they had a hard time with all the bugs and geckos, which surprisingly don’t bother me anymore.
We are planning to wake up early tomorrow and make our way to another place that is reserving a couple rooms for us. Hopefully its better! We are excited to do some hikes tomorrow and enjoy the jungle for a few days.
