my first official tour was to volcan masaya.  to say the was awesome!

i half-expected it to be an old, wrinkley volcano that maybe spit up every 150 years or so.  nope...this man-eater was alive and kickin'.  it is considered the most active volcano today in nicaragua, and had its' last eruption in 2001.  our guide oscar was extremely knowledgeable (he grew up in masaya) and obviously he had some serious juice (which i attempted to explain this last sentence in spanish...but i believe he thought i was trying to work off my tour fees...and scared him).  anyhow, we were the only tour group (about 10 people) on the volcano at sunset, and the only group in the bat cave at dusk when they flew out for supper.  after us...there were large masses of tours and we got the best of it i think.

oh yeah...and we crawled deep inside a bat cave next to the volcano.  the whole experience was amazing.  10,000 bats flying around my head- yet never touching me, seeing the cave carved out from the lava flows, watching the fumes rapidly escape the mouth of the volcano, listening to the moans and creepy halloween-noises lava makes inside the earth.  unfortunately there was so much cloud formation from the volcano, we couldn't see the glowing lava inside.  usually this is visible after sunset.

just a quick note:  the shape of this volcano isn't as conical as others.  it was massive many years ago, but the top blew off - it imploded on itself...and now has split into two separate volcanos (mouths if you will).  also, i attached a little clip of the fumes escaping because it gives you an idea of the rate and activity and a clip of the bats.  it may take a few minutes to load, so keep arrowing back through the pics until it appears.
