Flag of New Zealand  , North Island,
Friday, October 31, 2008

So after leaving Auckland armed with a map and ipod and a rather delightful car to drive on the proper side of the road aain i set off and began my adventure by heading north.
The rolling green hills of the north island greeted me after i had negotiated the motorway and the lovely roads i came to a town called Whangarei which has it's aptly named Whangeraei falls. I stopped off and walked around at the falls, it was very beautiful and it was nice sunny day so that helped. I continued my drive upwards to the town of Paihia, which is in the glorious bay of islands.
After a day of driving i needed a stroll so i wandered along the beach taking in the vision of the islands and the sea. It was pretty cold by now so headed home for the night. Next morning i went uptown about a killometre to a town called Waitangi where there are the grounds in which the treaty between the english and the maori people was signed.
It was cool, it has the treaty house which is made entirely of wood and therefore has a lot of very impressive native carvings. I also saw a performance which included a welcome ceremony and the haka, which i have to say was really impressive. The grounds also had a gian wooden canoe that was sailed to New Zealand from the island of Hawiki.
That afternoon i took a boat trip around the bay of islands and eventually to 'the hole in the rock' which is as the name suggests a giant hole in a rock where the sea has eroded the islands stone base. After several attempts we sailed through the hole and off and around the numerous stunning beaches and the little islands of paradise that were dotted all around.
I stopped off at a town called Russell on the way back and wandered around there, checking it out.
After a ferry back to Paihia i spent the evening have a quiet little walk and then having a good old chat with people in the hostel.
