After a couple of hours we jumped back in the van and headed down to Shelley Beach to have lunch. This is a fantastic quiet little bay area. There were free BBQ's available to use again, so we rustled up a few Old English Bangers for lunch - Fab.
We then just vegged by the beach for about 3 hours. If we'd been allowed to camp here, we would have stayed for the night - it was so relaxed.
However, we were off to see Susan in Scarborough. This is the Susan Davies that has the same name as the mother-in-law, which was very scary when we saw the name on the list of our tour group in Vietnam. Anyway, we had promised Susan three months ago that we would pop by, so off we went. She lives in a place called Scarborough, near Redcliffe. It's about 50kms north of Brisbane. Funny seeing Michael & Desley and Susan within a matter of days!
We got to Scarborough about 5pm and headed for the beach area first. The similarities between this Scarborough and the one in England end with the name. It's a fair bit nicer here, and richer. Most of the houses on the river side have their own boats moored up next to their houses! All except one house which just had a canoe moored up where everyone else had their boats! That would be our house without a doubt - spend all the cash on big TV's and beer and screw the boat!!
After an hour of deciding which boat we would steal, we decided that the van wouldn't be able to tow it anyway, so gave up on the idea. (I suppose we could have nicked the canoe)!
We got to Susan's about 6pm although she wasn't getting in from work until 7pm. However, her Mum & Dad (Bev & Leo) were there to greet us upon our arrival. They are a lovely couple and they made us very welcome. They let us park our van on their front lawn and showed us round the place. The house actually overlooks the sea - about 50 yards away! It's a great view from the living room and front veranda. They also have a nice big back garden.
Leo cracked open a couple of cold ones whilst Lorna & Bev hit the wine. We had a really interesting chat with them and discovered that Leo is a dab hand at making stuff. Although it turns out that he starts a lot of stuff and takes ages to finish the job!!! Sound's like another Davies that we know. There definitely must be some related blood between Leo & Trev! Maybe if Leo comes over to Rainworth, they could both do half a job each and therefore actually finish one!!
Only kidding both of you - you're great really.
Anyway, Susan arrived at 7ish and it was great to see her again. We all had a good catch up on what we had been up to for the last 3 months and also reminisced about our time in Vietnam. All a good laugh.
Leo & Bev then knocked up some food for us which was lovely. We had BBQ steak & prawns with potato bake and salad. It was grand! These Aussie families sure know how to look after their English guests.
Although, after dinner, I was presented with a stubbie holder (a cooler thing to keep your beer bottle cool in) that was made from bulls scrotum!! Yes, I had a bulls scrotum in my hand......and drank from it!!
Next thing, the Mayor of Redcliffe turned up. Turns out he's good friends of the Davies clan. His name is Alan Sutherland, but by the time he left he was Dirty Al the Dodgy Mayor!! He sat with us all for a couple of hours getting leathered on wine & port. We all shared some Aussie & English stories which was a great laugh and enjoyable. We even got onto the Convicts versus Poms issues!!
All in all we had a fantastic evening and we have to thank Susan, Bev, Leo and Alan for that. A good insight into casual Aussie life - really good.
It was well after midnight before we finally made it to bed and that was only because Leo & Bev had work in the morning, otherwise I think we all could have been there until sunrise!
