We left Makarora at 9am this morning to head for Queenstown. On the way we had a stop off at Lake Wanaka. This is New Zealand's 3rd largest lake after Lake Taupo (which we went to on the North Island) and Lake Te Anau (which we will visit on the way to the Milford Track). The views around Lake Wanaka are fabulous. I am running out of words when trying to describe the scenery we have been privileged to see around New Zealand.
After a couple of stops down the lakes banks, we also had a break at Lake Hawea for a while. This looked great with the snow capped mountains behind it. We then pulled into Wanaka town. This is a really picturesque village on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Eight people on the bus went sky diving here which allowed me & Lorna to have a walk around part of the lake. We would have loved to have gone sky diving again but we could end up spending a fortune as we want to do it everywhere. The good thing is, according to all Kiwi's, tourists and sky divers, Lake Taupo is the best place to do it and after our experience I have to agree. The DVD's seem to be better from there as well.
After indulging in a sub of the day, we picked up the sky divers and headed off. On the way to Queenstown we passed the 45th Parallel. Apparently this is exactly half way between the South Pole and the Equator......great! Could have put that sign in Shirebrook and I would have believed it - how could I prove otherwise. Mind you, if it was in Shirebrook it would have been covered in graffiti & vomit by now and probably been an accessory for some cheap & nasty passion on a Saturday night!! No, it's probably best left in New Zealand.
We finally made it to Queenstown at about 4pm. First thing to do was book some activities. We all booked in to have some luge fun tomorrow afternoon. This was for 6 luge's and included the gondola ride up and down the mountain to the track as well. Me, Adam, Lauren & Chris also booked in to do the Canyon Swing tomorrow lunchtime. We must be mad. Throwing ourselves off the edge of a canyon, falling at speeds of 150kmph and then being catapulted across the canyon like a swing!! Freaks! And we booked to do it twice!!
To celebrate our bravery (or stupidity) we went to the famous Fergburger restaurant for some grub. The burgers here are massive, and I mean massive, as big as pizzas with layers of food in them. Lorna had a cockadoodledoo (no surprises there) which was just about a whole chicken on a cob with all the relish and sauces. I had a Mr Big Stuff (of course) which consisted of half a cow, half a pig, cheese, relish and sauces. It was huge. As difficult as you might find this to believe, I couldn't get my gob round it!! But they were absolutely gorgeous. It was a struggle but we ate every last bit!
We all decided to go out for a few beers tonight as the group will be splitting up tomorrow as we go our separate ways. It was good because all 11 of us turned up and so did our bus driver - Nana. We hammered a few 2 for 1 beers in the Base Bar before heading off to The Buffalo Club. Here, we again managed to skank 2 for 1 drinks, but there were also loads of scantily clad female bar staff giving away free tequila - brilliant!! Scantily clad birds and free alcohol - don't make me leave here please!!
Alas, we eventually had to leave. It was probably about the right time as my tongue had been stood on about thirty odd times and Chris had been spending way too long in the toilets!! Next stop was The World Bar. There were a few more 2 for 1 drinks before we then moved onto $10 Teapots. This was as it sounds, a teapot full of any cocktail. Obviously I had the Long Island Iced Tea and to be fair, it was pretty strong. I was impressed. Well, these teapots flowed all night long and it wasn't long before we were all on the dancefloor strutting our stuff. The night was also getting a little blurry by now......
....about 3am we decided that more food was required. So, over to Fergburger again! Lorna just had chips this time, I can't remember what everyone else had, but I had a Cock Cajun!! Don't get too excited please, I haven't gone back to Ladyboy Land! This was just about a whole chicken with Cajun spices on it, dumped onto a huge cob. God it was grand! This is where my memory of the evening ends.....Canyon Swing should be eventful tomorrow!
