One good thing that came out of Barrytown was use of the internet. We went on last night and managed to book on the Milford Track! We had always wanted to do this but hadn't booked because it didn't look like we could fit it into our schedule. However, we moved a few things round, and with the help of our driver, managed to fit it in. Thing was, because it is short notice we didn't think we would get in as only 40 people are allowed to start the walk each day (it takes 4 days to complete). When we went online there were 2 places left for the only day that we could start!! We couldn't believe our luck, so we booked it straight away. Dead happy!
We left Barrytown (which gained the name Baz Vegas) at about 12.30 and headed for Franz Josef.
On the way we stopped off at some small inbred town to do some shopping. We then stopped by a river to do some gold panning. Surprise surprise we didn't find any gold - well Lorna didn't tell me she found any anyway!!
We also went to the bottom of the Franz Josef Glacier to have a look at what we were going to be hiking tomorrow - it's look blummin' big!
Tonight we stopped at the Rainforest Retreat in Franz Josef. We had a double room booked for us as it was cheaper than a dorm bed each!! Go figure. Anyway it was another bed in a shed, although it was a smaller shed! It was nice and warm & cosy though.
We cooked our own food and then booked our full day hike up the glacier for tomorrow. We also managed to get on T'internet for the first time in 3 days. We didn't do much more as we wanted to be on form for tomorrow's hike.
