We had a stop off at Hope Saddle for a few photos and a break. We then arrived at Lake Rotorua (which means Long Lake), where we stopped for lunch. This was a really nice place and very peaceful. We have noticed that everywhere we have been, it's never overcrowded - it's great. Maybe in the height of summer it gets busier, but we prefer it just like this.
Next stop was Turanga National Park where we did a one hour walk along the coastal track. This was an easier walk but gave us some great views over the cliffs and bays on the west coast. Towards the end of the track we came to a seal colony. I know there are loads of seals in the World, but it's great to see them in their own environment, just lounging around on the rocks. Really cool.
We then arrived at our overnight accommodation in Barrytown, the All Nations Pub. As we approached, there were a load of bikers outside, drinking and just looking hard. You got the feeling we would have a backpacker or two missing in the morning!! As it happens, they left soon after we arrived - they must have thought we looked hard! Lol.
The place itself was a bit skanky, but we have to remember that Barrytown consists of this pub and about 6 houses! Seriously, there are no shops or anything! I think it's just a halfway point between Abel Tasman National Park and Franz Josef.
This evening we had to make our own entertainment so fancy dress was in order. It was a simple theme as there weren't many clothes to choose from, so men dressed as women and women dressed as men. Lorna became a Manchester geezer from the nineties complete with drawn on goatee beard - sorted! I became some Dirty Death Nurse complete with uniform and marigold glove! It actually felt a little too comfortable at times!! It did make toilet time a little confusing that's for sure.
The drinks flowed all night as well, especially during happy hour.
