We landed in Sydney at about 08:00 and was greeted off the plane by a member of Qantas's staff. He was 'pleased' to tell us that, although we have missed our 08:15 connection, he has kindly booked us on the next available flight at 12:30!!
So, now I'm not in the best frame of mind, but I remained polite and sophisticated in my response by only stabbing him twice and sticking my pen in his eye - only kidding, I didn't do the pen bit!
As a 'goodwill gesture', he gave us $40 to spend in the restaurant while we waited 4 hours for our flight. We grabbed the food and then snatched an hour of sleep in the airport.
The drama doesn't end yet. As we were pulling back from the gate in the plane, at 12:30, an alarm went off in the cockpit to say the doors weren't correctly shut. So, we had to go back to the gate for a mechanic to repair it! An hour later, we were good to go, although, with the door issue, no-one was sure how far we'd get!!
We did manage to survive the flight and landed in Auckland at about 7pm local time. We got the airport shuttle bus to our studio apartment and checked in. We have gone for a studio because it was quite cheap for a city centre, but mainly because we can do all our own cooking making it cheaper, and we can get all our clothes washed and dried as their is a washer/drier in the room.
All we did tonight was go to the supermarket and then watch tv. Trouble is, we were 5 hours ahead of Singapore so it was difficult to get to sleep. Was up until about 4am wide awake watching baseball.
