The train arrived in Sapa, just, at about 8.30am. It had been a slower than normal journey due to the floods that occurred here last week. 160 people had died in the floods and landslides and part of the train tracks had been washed away. The tracks had been repaired but the train still had to take it steady.
After surviving the journey we decided to reward ourselves with a big English fry-up, and would you believe it, we found an English pub in Sapa called the Red Dragon. The breakfast really did hit the right spot (although nothing still beats Molly Malones in Siem Reap).
Lorna and I then took a walk round the small town of Sapa and visited the markets and took in the views. One of the best views we got was from the veranda behind the Royal View Hotel. You don't need to be a guest, we just went in and had a drink and sat outside on the veranda for about an hour. The views are breathtaking
In the afternoon, Lorna and I sat on the veranda of our lodge that we were stopping in. It's called the ATI Sapa Lodge and is excellent for views (see photo's). As we were sat there drinking a cold one, savouring the mountain views, we were joined one by one by the rest of the group. We entertained them on Vickers Veranda. Not quite in the same drunken manner as a party at Chez Vickers back in Mansfield, but still an event that required people to be on a guest list! It was a cracking afternoon.
In the evening we went to a Vietnamese restaurant to celebrate Chris's birthday. Much rice wine was consumed and we also got him a big cake. We then hit the Red Dragon (the pub, not a brightly coloured mythical creature that had suddenly appeared at the end of the bar - that would have been a little spooky, and a little stupid to actually hit it!). Anyway, we WENT to the Red Dragon for a few more bevvies before heading back for last ones on the Vickers Veranda. As it was late, I did have to charge an entrance fee this time. No-one paid!!
