Went to the museum today....shot myself.....
Okay, so I didn't shoot myself, but it was a close call. Museums aren't really my thing, but I thought it necessary to take a look round...oh, and it was free entry! We had to queue for about an hour, which obviously didn't help things, and I was photographed with a brolley up in the sun! I was protecting my solar panelled head! Actually, the other day two young Chinese girls came up to me and asked if I was a professor. When I questioned the reason for their comments, they said thatin China they have a saying that is "Man with shiny head has great intelligence"! Now, I am not sure whether this was a compliment or a p**s take, but as everyone in England mocks me for my stunted hair growth, I will take it as a compliment and I am moving to China on a permanent basis as soon as possible!!
Anyway, in the museum I did actually learn a few things. The best part was the Ancient Olympic Exhibition (transported from the British Museum as it happens). Did you know that the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC? And that the first Modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896? (London has held the games twice, 1908 & 1948, and will also hold the 2012 games). Also, I think I have heard this before, butin Ancient Greek times, victory was conceived as a winged goddess whom the Greeks called......Nike!!
Lorna's interest was swung towards two different parts of the exhibition. The first part was a range of Wine mixing bowls...for obvious reasons. The other parts was the information board which stated that all Olympic winners in ancient times were then allowed to eat for free in their home towns for the restof their lives! Eating for free in Mansfield or Rainworth is not really my idea of a reward, but Lorna seemed keen. I am not sure which Olympic event she would compete in though....Pie eating, Vodka drinking, shoe buying are not events that I am aware are in the modern olympics!
The one piece of information that I saw in the museum that should be relevant today, is a quote made in Ancient Greek times that said..
"Mistresses we keep for the sake of pleasure, Concubines for the daily care of our persons, but wives to bear us legitimate children and to be the faithful guardians of our household"
I couldn't have said it better myself....bring it on!
In the evening we took a walk along the banks of the other side of the bay to get a different perspective of Shanghai. I do think that when all the construction is complete, this is going to be a fantastic city and well worth a visit.
We went into a shopping centre on our way back which was huge! It was the bigger than the size of Meadowhall in Sheffied in length, but also 10 floors high instead of 2!! It had absolutely everything in it! It was hard work getting Lorna and my credit cards out of there in one piece.
