We arrived into Beijing at about 5am and checked into out hotel, the Home Inn (part of the Rainbow Hotel) for about 6am. This gave us time for a shower and change before we headed off to tge Forbidden City at 7.30am.
We spent about 3 hours in the city, but we went in from the oppossite end to Tiannamen Square instead, which meant we totally avoided the crowds, especially with it being early as well. Some of the buildings and the whole history is amazing and is definitely a must do if in Beijing - get a tour guide though if you want to get the best out of it. I have added photo's of the descriptions for the different buildings below if you are interested, it saves me boring you all in the blog!
We exited the city into Tiannamen Square, which is massive. Tricky Ted had a sitt down protest whilst here (see photo) but there were no tanks around, so all was well.
This is where the White Westener Syndrome really took off. We really thought we were fimstars. All the Chinese wanted their photo's taken with us and wanted us to have photo's with their children - this was obviously quitee dangerous with Lorna around, but she behaved herself for a change! Thing waas, it was fun at first, but became a bit of a chore after taking an hour to walk from the National Flag to the Memorial Monument (about 100 yards)! I don't think I could handle the fame thing.
After this experience we hit McDonalds before heading back to the hotel to change. We were out for an early meal tonight as were off to see the Shaolin Monks Kung Fu show at 7.30pm.
Noww I have to say, this show was absolutely fantastic! Some of the things they did were asttounding, like breaking metal bars on their heads and balancing themselves on the tips of swords! And it had a storyline to it as well. We were so impressed, we bought the DVD & CD set of the show afterwards to send home. We also managed to get our photo's took with some of the performers as well. This was a very memorable night.
After the show it was back for an early night as I was getting up at 2.40am to watch the Euro 2008 final, then at 5.30am heading off to The Greaat Wall. And I would just like to point out that earlier in my blog, I had tipped Spain from the start, and of course, no-one wants the Germans to win.....we shall see.....
