Sunday, December 26, 2010

Situated on the island of Quinchao, a 60 minute bus ride and short ferry from Castro, the seaside village of Achao was recommended as a destination due to its landmark church and the unique architecture.  There was an almost eerie atmosphere across the small community as the streets were almost deserted on this Sunday afternoon.  The 18th century Jesuit church is Chiloe's oldest - built in 1740 - and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Crowned by a 25 metre tower, it is sided with alerce shingles (species of evergreen found in South America) and held together by wooden pegs rather than nails.
