Salimos de casa el sábado 28 de Octubre después de haber calculado distancias y reajustado tiempos.
Nos pasamos todo el día viernes cargando y descargando, poniendo y sacando, redistribuyendo. Claudio instaló más botones y cosas para el auto, atornilló unas cajas y cortó la escalera (la que usamos para subir a la carpa) para que entrara bien en el espacio que nos quedaba. Pareciera que el espíritu de la noche de brujas pasó por acá, porque de alguna forma u otra el auto se hizo más chico o las cosas crecieron o realmente llevamos más de lo que pensamos o más de lo que necesitamos. ¿Por qué tengo tanto miedo de olvidarme algo? ¿Qué es lo que realmente queremos cuando nos preocupamos tanto por lo que nos olvidamos? ¿Es que no queremos partir? ¿O es que sabemos que en casa estamos cómodos? Ya pasaron varias horas de viaje

01 Gaby, Claudia y Claudio

. Lo que nos olvidamos de cargar ya es historia, (siempre habrá un Wal-mart cerca... ( por ahora....)

Oklahoma se veía muy activa y el paisaje colorido. El otoño es hermoso en cualquier lado. Los árboles están cambiando de colores y se veían hermosos verdes, amarillos y rojos. Estaba muy lindo el paisaje.
Nosotros con rumbo al sur, todos los controles del auto parecen funcionar bien.
Bueno, la camioneta anda súper, esa era una preocupación, por que no sabíamos como andaría con todas las cosas ya cargadas, y el consumo de gasolina nos está sorprendiendo (17,9 millas por galón o 8,4 Km. por litro).
Paramos en Houston en la casa de nuestros amigos Claudia y Gabriel. Después de más de 3 años de no verlos, no nos alcanzó el tiempo para ponernos al día con las novedades.
Trayecto Houston-Monterrey Octubre 29-2006
Partimos después de un buen descanso, con algún que otro percance, ya que el colchón de aire se desinflaba cada 3 o 4 horas.
Parece que estamos en la misma ruta que toman las mariposas Monarcas en su migración anual hacia México; lástima que muchas de ellas terminaron siendo estrelladas por el parabrisas del auto decorándolo muy armoniosamente

02 Mexican Border

Cruzamos la frontera USA-México en Laredo-Nuevo Laredo. Tuvimos percances menores pero nada del otro mundo.
Decidimos tomar la autopista y pagar $185.00 pesos mexicanos (18 dólares por 120Km.) ya que se nos está haciendo tarde y nuestros amigos nos están esperando en Monterrey.
Monterrey es una ciudad inmensa, y si digo inmensa es porque nos perdimos y cruzamos la ciudad y es realmente grande!!!!!!! Pero por suerte, preguntando se llega a Roma, y después de 2 horas, llegamos a casa de Carmen y Oscar.
Tuvimos una velada agradable y luego salimos a recorrer un poco el centro de la ciudad, que es realmente bonito, estuvimos caminando por una peatonal, una plaza muy cerca de la casa de Gobierno, dónde nos encontramos con un conjunto de mariachi y un imitador de Juan Gabriel que nos hizo reír un rato.
También pasamos por el barrio más antiguo de la ciudad, dónde la calles son más angostas y de piedras y la mayoría de las casa fueron convertidas en diferentes tipos de negocios pero sin modificar su estructura y manteniendo la arquitectura original.
Día 3. Tramo Monterrey-San Luis Potosí.

03 Carmen y Ceci

Salimos de la casa de nuestros amigos en dirección a San Luis Potosí. Yo estaba muy cansada y Claudio no tanto. Nuevamente en la autopista y hemos pagado primero 33 pesos y luego 52 pesos mexicanos.
El día es largo y la autopista bastante monótona. Lo bueno es que de esta manera lo estamos haciendo más rápido.
Decidimos no hacer paradas en el camino y quedarnos a dormir en San Luis Potosí. Elegimos un hotel bastante económico con lo necesario y nos fuimos en taxi hasta el centro de la ciudad. El centro histórico es realmente muy bonito, lleno de iglesias y mucha gente por todos lados. Vimos también, en el ayuntamiento municipal un altar dedicado al Día de los Muertos.
Día 4. Martes 31 de Octubre del 2006.
Decidimos ir nuevamente en taxi hasta el centro histórico de San Luis Potosí ya que nos gustó tanto. Además aprovechamos para resolver el inconveniente que tenemos hasta ahora de retirar efectivo. Entre una cosa y otra nos perdimos una hora para cambiar dinero en el banco.
Salimos de San Luis Potosí camino a Ciudad de México. Seguimos por autopista, caminos lindos y buenos. Vemos muchos trabajos en la carreteras, arreglando las rutas y o construyendo más.

04 San Luis Potosi

Nos desviamos hasta Pozos, un pequeño poblado al este de la autopista 57. Antiguamente, Pozos era una ciudad minera de extracción de plata. Hoy es prácticamente un pequeño pueblo. Según nuestra guía turística, llegó a tener 80.000 habitantes y hoy solo cuenta con 2.000.
El otro desvío que hicimos, nos lo fue recomendado. Fuimos hasta Peña de Bernal. Otro pequeño poblado al costado de un magnificente cerro, ubicado a unos 30 Km. al este de la carretera 57. Todas sus calles de piedra y unas subidas y bajadas muy empinadas.

Hoy nuevamente terminamos recorriendo mucha distancia y creemos que de aquí en más va a cambiar.

We started our trip on Saturday, October 28th.
We spent Friday loading and unloading, putting in and taking out, rearranging everything in the car. Claudio installed more buttons and systems for the car, screwed in a few boxes and cut the ladder (the one we use to get up on the roof of the car) so that it would fit in the space left. It seemed that the spirit of Halloween was around here because somehow the car got smaller, or our stuff grew bigger, or we are taking more of what we thought we would, or maybe we are taking more than what we need

05 San Luis Potosi 1

. Why am I so afraid to forget something? What do we really want when we are so concern about what we forget? Is it that we don't want to depart? Or is it that we know that we are comfortable when we are home?
It is late now, our travel started a while back now. Whatever we forgot to load is history now... so far, we still see Wal-Mart signs on the road!
Oklahoma was very busy Saturday morning and the landscape very colorful. Autumn is beautiful anywhere. The trees are changing colors and we could see beautiful greens, yellows and reds. The scenery was beautiful.
We headed south. All the controls of the car seem to work fine. Claudio says that our truck is running great. That was a concern we had, we did not know how it would run once it was loaded. Gas consumption is also surprising us; 17.9 miles per gallon, or 8.4 km. per liter.
We stopped in Houston, at our friends Claudia and Gabriel's house. After three years of not seeing them, we did not have enough time to catch up with our lives.

We departed after a good rest, with some minor difficulties since the air mattress kept on losing its air every 3 or 4 hours

06 San Luis Potosi 2

It seems that we are in the same road as the Monarch butterflies during their migration to Mexico. We are sorry that many of them will not make it to Mexico since they are being smashed by our windshield while harmoniously decorating our car.
We crossed USA-Mexican border at Laredo-Nuevo Laredo. We had minor difficulties but nothing too bad.
We decided to take the autopista and pay $185.00 Mexican pesos (18 dol. for 120 km.) since it was getting late. Monterrey in an immense city and we know this since we got lost and went from end to end of the city! Luckily, after 2 hours of driving and asking for directions, we arrive to the house of Carmen and Oscar.
We had a nice time with our friends and then we went to the center of the city which is really beautiful. We walked, around some government buildings and a few plazas in the center were we found a Mariachi group and someone imitating Juan Gabriel and we laughed a while.
Monterrey's oldest neighborhood has very narrow stone streets and the majority of the houses there have been converted into different type of stores. These stores are there without modifying the original structure and façade of the buildings.
Monterrey-San Luis Potosí, October 30-2006
We are again taking the autopista paying 33 and then 52 Mexican pesos. The day is long and the road quite monotonous. The good side of taking the autopista is that we are riding a bet faster. We did not make stops on the way and stayed the night in San Luis Potosi.
We picked a very economical hotel, with a safe place to leave our car and we took a taxi to the center of the city

07 San Luis Potosi 4

. The historic center is really pretty with lots of churches and lots of people everywhere. We sow in the Ayuntamiento Municipal (City Hall) a display dedicated for the Day of the Dead.
Tuesday October 31st, 2006
We decided to visit again the historic center of San Luis Potosi. Unfortunately since we are having cash problems we ended up spending one hour in a bank just to change dollars to pesos!
We left from San Luis Potosi to Mexico City. We continued on the autopista. Nice and good roads. We see lots of people working on the roads, fixing them up or constructing new roads.
We detoured to Pozos, a small town to the east of the route 57. Pozos was a silver mining city. Today, Pozos is a very small town with lots of run down buildings. According to our guide, it had up to 80,000 habitants, today, only 2,000 people live there.
The other detour we took was to Peña de Bernal; another small town next to a magnificent hill at about 30 km. east of the autopista. This small town has very steep streets all of stones, I was glad Claudio was driving.
The rest of the way to Mexico City was calm and steady. We had arranged to meet Alfredo, our friend from Mexico City, just after the toll booth of Topotzotlan.
