One quite interesting thing though that did happen was that, upon arrival at Venice Airport, my shuttle that I reserved was NOT there for me. I ended up figuring out by asking strangers how to use the bus and where to get off and where to walk. (The people at the information desk were completely incompetent and unhelpful... so I ended up talking to a random lady who studied abroad at UC Berkeley in 1988.)
First thing I saw on TV: MTV Europe, "Pop Porno" music video -- "tu sei cattivo con me perché come se io fossi un'attrice porno" ... "you are naughty with me because you look at me as if I were a porn actress." That is practically the entire lyrics of the song, set to an electronica background. Eurotrash is alive and well...
And another interesting thing... a few of us walked a longgggg way in the heat/humidity today out to the area of town that had strip malls, and we ended up at this Circuit City equivalent place. We got our ethernet cords, hence me finally having internet. And on the way back we decided to walk through the really pretty park-ish thing along the canals....and then (sorry Mom, you'll read it here I guess, but I don't want to tell you and worry you to much!! I'm never ever going back againnn!!!!) we walked past a bunch of people all shooting up. Two groups of people. I don't think walking there was something that we could have known was a particularly poor choice, but now we do know, and I'm never going into a park again in Europe unless I see lots of not-scary people there too.
And we just had dinner with our program a few hours ago...it was pretty bad, but what do you expect if the university is paying? And a few of us walked around the city just now to see things. I got a "spritz," which is the drink of Padua. Looking it up online now, I see that it is... Aperol (italian liqueur of bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona), Prosecco (sparkling white wine), dash of seltzer water, ice, and a slice of orange. Well, it's kinda disgusting... it has that orange spicey flavor that I really don't care for, and it was sweeeet.... :( But that's ok, I will just try other things.
And refrain from walking down the street drinking from a wine bottle... I won't name names. But perhaps that's because I'm pretty bad with names anyway.
Ciao, tutti! Sogni d'oro! I'll be back with pictures when I have some.
