So anyway, we decided to move to San Ignacio today, which is half way up Belize, but being such a small country (and even with 2 bus changes) we made it in 5 hours:
- Placencia to Dangriga ($20 Belize - $10 US for both)
- Dangriga to Belmopan ($12 Belize - $6 US)
- Belmopan to San Ignacio ($6 Belize - $3 US)
Most of the trip was along curves and low jungle mountain, and slightly uncomfortable as the buses were already full when we got to them which mean sitting on our bags most of the time - but no worries
Not much in San Ignacio itself, except an excellent fruit market at the entrance and a good curry restaurant (Hannah's). For the last 2 weeks we have been cooking ourselves at the cabin, which was excellent. However we did suffer a lack of ingredients at the southern tip of Placencia as the supplies don't get that far in large quantities. Basically we were reduced to pasta and rice with other canned ingredients - we enjoyed it although it did get a bit repetitive after 2 weeks. In any case as a result our stomachs are recovered fully, and the sight of fresh fruit wakes us salivate as much as Pavlov's puppy.
Travel story of the day: when we arrived at Belmopan to get the last bus on to San Ignacio both of us were in need of using the toilets. Veronika went first while Marcos defended our seats on the bus. While Veronika was away a caribean lady selling sandwiches came on board. She was singing her sales and very happy and talking to everyone. When she got to Marcos she said with all the bus listening:
Lady - How are you Mr Tourist? Are you enjoying our country?
Marcos - Very well thanks. Enjoying it a lot.
Lady - Have you been making love on our beaches a lot?
Marcos - Not yet, no.
Lady - Not yet? Do you need a woman, as a woman is necessary for it.
Marcos - No thanks.
Lady - Ok. Have a good day.
So that was it for today. Tomorrow we will do a visit to some Maya ruins 15 mins away from the town. Its good to be back on the road after the rest.
