Where I stayed
Selva Negra - where the staff knows your name...
In any case, yes its Marcos' birthday today - officially 37 - so most of the day has been dedicated to celebrate it. We all know birthdays are important dates to remember, but 37 is especially different for Marcos as he already celebrated it last year!!
To make a long story short, last year on the 22nd of June both Veronika and Marcos travelled to New York, New York. For some odd reason (most probably yet lag) when the birtday day arrived and Marcos was asked how old he was, he said 37. Marcos was surprised how quickly his 36th had gone by, although don't they always fly by!
Anyway, Veronika and Marcos (and a bunch of others) happily celebrated his 37th birthday. It was only a month later when a basic maths calculation made Marcos realise he was really only 36! So the symbolism on this 37th....
With regards to the title, Marcos has been quite poorly with a stomach bug during the last 10 days. He tried the normal European armament (Immodium and Fortasec) which seemed to stop the problem only to bring it back 12 hours later. Then he tried the local medicine Alka/D which solved it for a day also, but not completely.
Given the amount of days passed it was obvious it was more than a minor food poisoning or bad stomach. Luckily the Hotel Selva Negra has a doctor amongst its employees (for the coffee plantation workers). Yesterday we called for him and he quickly came along and pointed out that it had to be a local amoeba which has the same effects as described to him.
He gave Marcos 4 tablets for yesterday and 2 for today, which has solved everything quite fast. So as the title says...Marcos feels much healthier with 37 than with 36.
Together with the health news, today we are happy as we saw our first Quetzal bird (female) which are incredibly difficult to spot. We had been trying to spot one for the last month (since Costa Rica) and so it was euphoric to actually see one. We thought they were extinct!
We also bumped into another family of howler monkeys (we some a group yesterday), and the Ranchero bird (no idea in English) with its fascinating call.
Apart from that we jumped around the restaurant with other Nicaraguan guests after Spain beat the current World Champions Italy out of the Euro Championships. Every match a Germany / Spain final gets more realistic...and that will be a first for Veronika and Marcos...will marriage survive nationalism???
Goodbye for now. Photographs and films will follow tomorrow. For the time being here is the webpage of the hotel http://www.selvanegra.com/
