Well, what can one do on Saint Valentine´s day in order to be different? How about a trip to Uruguay?!

It seems we were not the only ones with this idea, as the  5 ferries crossing from Buenos Aires to Colonia are packed with tourists. Most of them are Argentinians going to spend a week or weekend at Punta Este (the Benidorm of South America...)

Apart from them, Montevideo (capital of Uruguay) was also excited with the arrival of the "Oceania Insignia"...the fully gay luxury cruise boat which has been at Buenos Aires, arriving at Montevideo and then going to Rio de Janeiro.

The ferry from Buenos Aires only takes 1 hour to Colonia de Sacramento ($160 arg = approx 30 euro return ticket). We decided to do a day trip to Colonia as it sounds like the best part of the coast of Uruguay, and additionally given it is high season here, Montevideo and Punta del Este are crowded, expesive and overbooked with brasilian, uruguayan and argentinian holiday makers. We can suffer that in Spain...

Colonia is a lovely little town, full of charming restaurants...and museums. However, it seems that Uruguayans have caught the Argentinian Museum disease, and all 3 museums we wanted to visit (Spanish, Portuguese and Indian) were closed... I guess the fact that high season is when they can get most visits and money still hasnt sunk in...pitty.

I think someone must of got quite irritated with the Spanish Museum...see the graffitti!

Anyway, Colonia was  an portuguese settlement, later used by British to smuggle goods into Argentina. Now it is fully dedicated to tourism with "Thrifty" renting golf carts to tourists to go around the town. It is actually quite a waste as the town hardly has 200 metres in any direction and the nice streets are pedestrian ones...anyway -tourists will be tourists.

Lunch was supreme for around 10 euros (all included)
