From the earlier stop, it had taken us two hours to arrive in Tanjung Selamat, a suburb outside of Medan City but falls within the city limits. The main reason to stop over here was to bring my family over to visit this particular Mother Mary Church whereby here she is known as Velangkani Matha, similar to the Velangkani church from Tamil Nadu,India.

The entire church was designed by the pastor, Father James Brahmaputra, from India. The structure itself is South Indian styled where the lower floor of the church is the congregation hall and the first floor being the church itself. The minaret is similar to the South Indian style of building temples whereby it must be of seven stories onwards in odd numbers. In this case, it is seven stories.

The design itself is so unique and the construction of this church took 2 years, most of the donations coming from devotees in Singapore. The church has a great attraction as there has been many miracles performed at this church, especially healing.

There is a special shrine for Velangkani Matha on the right side of the temple. Here after the consecration ceremony, spring water naturally started flowing out from below the idol, another miracle at this church. It flows from beneath the idol, passing through the feet of Velangkani Matha and now, it has been diverted into taps for devotees to collect the holy water.

To all my fellow friends, I would strongly recommend to visit this church as it is a beauty of its own.

I visited the church on 20th August with two of my friends from Kota Kinabalu. We feel so honored to be met by Father James minutes after our arrival though we did not inform anyone of our coming. Father James gave us a brief history of the church and we took some photographs with him before he left us to see the beautiful interior decor of the church.

Before we left each of us took 2 small mineral bottles of holy water to be brought back . I should have taken more bottles of the holy water to be distributed to families and friends back home but earlier on we went on shopping spree and feared that we will be overweight so we can only take two bottles each.

When we checked in at the airport our luggage were overweight and Airasia is very strict on excess luggage. My luggage was in excess of 3 kilos while my two friends have more excess. We kept our fingers crossed and just waited for the counter people to slap us with the excess luggage penalties. Lo and behold...the lady in the front counter stood up and told us that she is not charging us anything for the excess luggage but warn us that when we reach KL airport we will have to pay for the excess luggage. Ok..we were so happy as the first hurdle is overcome. When we reached KL airport we checked in our luggage for our flight back to Kota Kinabalu. I am already prepared to pay for the excess luggage when the lady at counter again over rule Airasia ruling and let us off hook without paying anything. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that we can now proceed to the departure lounge. It was a miracle and I believe the holy water in our luggage has helped us otherwise we would have paid one two hundreds for our excess luggage.
