The day started with a very good breakfast at the hotel. By 7.15 am, we were already having our breakfast. The breakfast menu had a great assortment of dishes, mostly of the traditional Karo style which is similar to the Malay way of cooking. Some of the items included Friend Noodles, Lemang (rice steamed in bamboos), Chicken Rendang and many more.

In half an hour, we were finished with our breakfast and head to the room to get our bags for check out. Right after check out, our first destination was to Gundaling Hill. This hill is within close proximity of the Berastagi markets but there is a short ascend. Alternatively, you could also plan to go on horse back from the town centre.

The Gundaling Hill is at 1575 meters above sea level. However, the town of Berastagi is already 1300 meters above sea level. From this hill, you could get a panoramic view of both Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak, the two active volcanos which I had mentioned in the previous entries.

Despite being a major tourist attraction, the upkeep on the place is not too good. Grass had overgrown and garbage maintenance was also not that good. Once we were uphill, we just sat back enjoying the view from the hill. From here, you could see the entire Berastagi town.

Also another interesting legend on this hill, is that of two people, whose statue has been built here like a monument. The legend goes on to say that a few hundred years ago, a British gentleman had fallen in love with a local girl and the locals were against this but they could not do any harm to him as he was a man of authority within the British rule.

Hence, as the relationship went on for years, one day the British gentleman had been summoned by the Queen to return. He then made an attempt to contact his local girlfriend to meet him at this hill. The inquisitive locals followed them secretly to see what was going to transpire between them. When this couple met at the hill, this British man had hugged his girlfriend and told her about the news and as he was leaving, uttered the words "Good Bye Darling". The locals, who were not able to speak English, caught the words wrongly and understood it as Gundaling...where by good bye darling had become gundaling. It is also told that the local girlfriend then took her own life here on this hill and from that day onwards, this hill is known as Gundaling Hill.

Till date, a statue of the couple is there and it is believed that courting couples and married couples, MUST NOT take photographs beside this monument. If they do, within a short time, the couple would end up breaking up. :) What a legend.

After enjoying the activities on the hill, we left this place heading to Medan. At sharp 9 am we left this place.

Along the way, within 40 minutes of journey, outside the town limits of Berastagi, we had stopped at another place to get a panoramic view and enjoy some corn which is a common street delicacy here. This corn is available in two preparations, either steamed or barbecued. The steamed one is applied butter on it and the barbecued one, chilly paste is applied on it making it very spicy. The stop here was brief. Within 15 minutes, we continued our journey to Medan, the third largest city in Indonesia.
